While on the Beach with My Husband, a Woman Ran Up, Knelt, and Said His Name

It was our 10th wedding anniversary, and John had surprised me with tickets to the Dominican Republic. He gave me 20 minutes to pack my things, and we set off.

I hadn’t seen John much over the past few months due to his new project. We only saw each other briefly in the early morning and late at night, so this trip was a precious gift for us! We drank out of coconuts, ate seafood, and danced bachata every night.Yesterday, we were walking along the seashore, enjoying an incredible sunset. Just as I was about to tell him I was expecting, a woman appeared out of nowhere, kneeled in front of him, and he freaked out. I was sure it was a joke till she said, “John, it’s me, Melissa.”

John’s face went pale, and I felt a chill run down my spine. Who was this woman, and why was she acting so familiar with my husband?”Melissa?” John stammered, clearly taken aback. “What are you doing here?”

“I’ve been looking for you, John,” she said, tears streaming down her face. “I found out you were here and had to see you. I need to tell you something important.”My heart was racing. This was supposed to be a romantic getaway, a chance for John and me to reconnect, and now this woman was disrupting everything.

John helped Melissa to her feet, and she clung to his arm, looking desperate. “I’m sorry to interrupt your vacation,” she said, glancing at me with pleading eyes. “But it’s a matter of life and death.””Let’s talk over there,” John said, pointing to a secluded spot on the beach. He turned to me, his eyes full of apology. “Honey, give me a few minutes to sort this out, okay?”

I nodded, even though a part of me wanted to scream. I watched them walk away, my mind swirling with questions. Who was Melissa? What did she want from my husband? After what felt like an eternity, John returned. He looked troubled, his brow furrowed with concern. “I’m so sorry about this,” he began. “Melissa is… well, she’s an old friend from college. She’s going through a rough time and needed my help.”

“Why didn’t you ever mention her before?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.”It’s complicated,” he said, running a hand through his hair. “We lost touch years ago, but she was in a bad situation and somehow found me here. I promise I’ll explain everything, just not right now. Can we go back to enjoying our evening?”

I nodded, though I was far from satisfied with his vague explanation. As we walked back along the shore, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the story than John was letting on. But for now, I decided to push my doubts aside. This was our anniversary, and I wanted to savor every moment of it.Later that night, as we lay in bed, I told John the news I had been bursting to share. “I’m pregnant,” I said softly, watching his face light up with joy.

“That’s amazing!” he exclaimed, hugging me tightly. For a moment, all thoughts of Melissa faded away, and we were just two people in love, celebrating the start of a new chapter in our lives. But deep down, I knew that once we returned home, I would need answers. Who was Melissa really, and why had she come back into our lives? And could our marriage survive the secrets that had suddenly surfaced on this otherwise perfect trip? Only time would tell.
